SS100P04R29 Orientations and Builds

This starter is also listed in these orientations and configurations. The motor, gearing, flange and pinion are the same; the suffix sets the inlet, exhaust and drive-housing positions or marks a special build: SS100P04R29-23.

Why Choose the SS100P04R29?

  • Lube-free. No lubricator to fill and no oil in the exhaust.

  • One size for engines up to 10 L. Ingersoll Rand states a single SS100 replaces the 3BM, 5BM and SS175, lowering cost and inventory.

  • Easy installation. Overhung pinion and a 360° flange design, with standard and metric pinions to fit most manufacturers' engines.

  • Durable. Alloy-steel construction and a compact package.

  • No sparks, no batteries. Works on compressed air or natural gas.

SS100P04R29-21 FAQ

What engine size does the SS100 fit?

Ingersoll Rand rates one SS100 for diesel engines up to 10 liters. For larger engines, step up to the SS350 or a ST400 turbine.

What do the last two digits mean?

They are the orientation code: the first digit positions the air inlet and the second positions the exhaust, each numbered 0 to 3 around the housing. Orientation changes how the starter is clocked, not whether it fits.

Does the SS100 need lubrication?

No. The SS100 is lubricant-free, so there is no lubricator and no oil mist.

What air supply and accessories does it need?

Provide a 90 to 150 psi supply, with enough receiver volume to deliver up to 415 scfm while the engine cranks. Ingersoll Rand's matching accessories include SRV100 relay valve (SRV100-SMB with push button), SRV150SS gas-rated relay valve, ST1000-267-24 strainer, 150BMP-1051B (12 V) or 150BMP-2451B (24 V) solenoid valve, SS350-A674 muffler.

Can it crank for a long time?

Ingersoll Rand does not rate this starter for extended cranking (more than 10 seconds). For hard-starting engines or long crank cycles, step up to a larger starter.

Ingersoll Rand pneumatic air starters can replace any factory mounted starter engine and simultaneously offer a variety of helpful benefits. Compared to conventional electric starters, a pneumatic air starter occupies considerably less space as it is run by air. Pneumatic air starters are also considered safer in hazardous environments as they do not produce electrical sparks like electric starters sometimes do, thus eliminating the risk of igniting flammable materials that may be present.

Ingersoll Rand air starters have significantly more torque than electric starters of equivalent size, and that allows even a small air starter to start very large engines and turbines. In addition, electric starters as well as their wiring may become excessively hot in the event that it takes longer than expected to start the engine, while air-starters can be run for as long as their air supply lasts. Turbine starters provide even more torque and tend to be simpler, and therefore are a natural fit for turbine engines. Turbine air starters are utilized extensively on large turbofan engines commercial and military aircraft; as well as marine ships and vessels, trains, heavy construction equipment, and more.
