Description
The Ingersoll Rand B006PVR374-03-31P is a genuine IR B006-series pneumatic barring motor with pendant control. It turns a diesel or gas engine slowly and precisely, in either direction, so one technician can set timing, adjust valves, align couplings or inspect the engine. It produces 152 ft-lb (207 N·m) of breakaway torque at 90 psi and turns at 23 rpm at maximum power. It mounts on an SAE No. 3 flange and drives the ring gear through a 12-tooth, 6/8 pitch code 31 pinion. Ingersoll Rand rates the B006 for diesel engines up to 100 liters and gas engines up to 200 liters, which covers the Caterpillar 3500 family.

Barring a Caterpillar Engine with the B006

What a Barring Motor Is Used For
A barring motor rotates a stopped engine slowly and stops it exactly where you need it. Turning a large engine by hand with a barring bar is slow, tiring and risky. The B006 does it with compressed air at a steady 23 rpm, and you can reverse it at any time. Typical jobs include:
- Timing adjustments: bring each cylinder to top dead center precisely.
- Valve and injector adjustments: position each cam lobe for setting lash.
- Coupling and alignment work: rotate the crankshaft and driven equipment together during alignment.
- Inspections and routine maintenance: borescope checks, ring gear inspection and other scheduled or unplanned service.
Because it runs on compressed air, the B006 has no electrical arcing, so it suits hazardous locations, offshore platforms, gas compression stations and field service.
Engines the B006PVR374-03-31P Fits
Ingersoll Rand rates the B006 for diesel engines up to 100 liters and gas engines up to 200 liters. On the Caterpillar 3500 family, that covers:
| Caterpillar engine | Displacement | B006 suitable |
|---|---|---|
| 3508 | 34 L | Yes |
| 3512 | 51 L | Yes |
| 3516 | 69 L | Yes |
| 3520 | 86 L | Yes |
| 3524 | 103 L | Yes, at the B006 limit |
The pinion has to match your engine's ring gear. The code 31 pinion is 12 teeth at 6/8 diametral pitch, the same pinion used on Ingersoll Rand's SAE 3 air starters, so it suits engines that use 6/8-pitch starter ring gears. For other ring gears, Ingersoll Rand offers the B006 with pinion codes 15, 29, 77, 79, 85, 94, 893, 895 and 942. Send us the engine make, model and serial number and we will confirm the right configuration.
How to Read the Model Number
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| B006 | B006 series barring motor |
| PVR374 | B006 base model designation |
| 03 | SAE No. 3 mounting flange (01 = SAE No. 1) |
| 31 | Pinion code: 12 teeth, 6/8 pitch |
| P | Supplied with pendant control. Without the P, the motor comes without the pendant. |
B006PVR374-03-31P FAQ
What is the difference between the B006PVR374-03-31P and the B006PVR374-01-31P?
Only the mounting flange differs. The -03 version bolts to an SAE No. 3 flange and the B006PVR374-01-31P bolts to an SAE No. 1 flange. Torque, speed and pinion are the same.
Should I choose the B006 or the T480?
Choose by engine size. The B006 covers diesel engines up to 100 L and gas engines up to 200 L, weighs 25 lb with pendant and delivers 152 ft-lb. The T480PVRP-03-31P covers diesel engines up to 500 L and gas engines up to 1,000 L. It delivers 322 ft-lb at 65 rpm, weighs 58 lb and has an integral disc brake that holds the engine whenever the motor is stopped.
What air supply does the B006 need?
Supply clean, dry compressed air and do not exceed 90 psi (6 bar) at the motor inlet. If your plant air runs higher, install a regulator ahead of the pendant. A 43551-2 muffler is available to reduce exhaust noise.
Can the B006 stay mounted on the engine?
Yes. Ingersoll Rand designed the B006 to work either as a portable tool you move from engine to engine or as a permanently mounted unit. Thanks to the adjustable mounting flange, it can be clocked to suit the space around the flywheel housing. Always make sure the barring motor is disengaged before the engine is started.
Does the B006 have a brake?
No. The B006 stops when you release the pendant control. If you need the engine held by a brake while the motor is stopped, choose the T480, which has an integral disc brake that is always engaged when the motor is not running.

Ingersoll Rand pneumatic air starters can replace any factory mounted starter engine and simultaneously offer a variety of helpful benefits. Compared to conventional electric starters, a pneumatic air starter occupies considerably less space as it is run by air. Pneumatic air starters are also considered safer in hazardous environments as they do not produce electrical sparks like electric starters sometimes do, thus eliminating the risk of igniting flammable materials that may be present.
Ingersoll Rand air starters have significantly more torque than electric starters of equivalent size, and that allows even a small air starter to start very large engines and turbines. In addition, electric starters as well as their wiring may become excessively hot in the event that it takes longer than expected to start the engine, while air-starters can be run for as long as their air supply lasts. Turbine starters provide even more torque and tend to be simpler, and therefore are a natural fit for turbine engines. Turbine air starters are utilized extensively on large turbofan engines commercial and military aircraft; as well as marine ships and vessels, trains, heavy construction equipment, and more.
