Description
The Ingersoll Rand ST699BP03R31 is a genuine IR ST600-series pre-engaged turbine air starter built for 30 to 90 psi air supplies. It delivers up to 67 hp and 290 ft-lb of breakaway torque at just 90 psi from a lightweight 39 lb inline package, with an overtorque safety clutch that slips between 330 and 440 ft-lb. It mounts on an SAE No. 3 flange and drives a right-hand 12-tooth 6/8 pitch pinion. Ingersoll Rand rates the ST600 for diesel engines from 16 to 80 liters. It is for air only.

Performance by Supply Pressure
Ingersoll Rand publishes these figures for the ST699B:
| Supply pressure | Breakaway torque | Speed at max power | Max power | Flow at max power |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 psi (2.1 bar) | 110 ft-lb (149 N·m) | 1,950 rpm | 20 hp (15 kW) | 600 scfm (283 L/s) |
| 60 psi (4.1 bar) | 195 ft-lb (264 N·m) | 2,200 rpm | 41 hp (31 kW) | 1,150 scfm (543 L/s) |
| 90 psi (6.2 bar) | 290 ft-lb (393 N·m) | 2,400 rpm | 67 hp (50 kW) | 1,700 scfm (802 L/s) |
If you can supply 120 to 150 psi, the part-arc ST650BP03R31 uses a smaller air flow for the same job.

Why Choose the ST699BP03R31?
- Lightest in its class. At 39 lb, Ingersoll Rand calls the ST600 the lightest starter in its class.
- No lubricator, no oil mist.
- Protects the ring gear. Smooth pre-engagement limits wear, and the overtorque clutch slips at 330 to 440 ft-lb.
- Easy to fit. Extended pilot, offset pre-engage ports and 8 orientation options.
ST699BP03R31 FAQ
What is the opposite-rotation version of the ST699BP03R31?
The ST699BP03L942 is the opposite-rotation counterpart. Power, flange and gearing are the same; only the rotation and the matching pinion code differ. Match the rotation printed on your existing starter's nameplate.
Can it run on natural gas?
No. Ingersoll Rand specifies the ST600 for air only. For gas, ask about the SS800 vane series or the ST2000 "BG" turbine models.
What is the difference between the ST650 and the ST699?
Both share the ST600 housing. The ST650 has a 50% turbine arc for 90 to 150 psi supplies; the ST699 has a 99% arc for 30 to 90 psi supplies. Choose by the pressure you can deliver at the starter.
What air supply and accessories does it need?
Provide a 30 to 90 psi supply through a 1-1/2 in. line, with enough receiver volume to deliver up to 1,700 scfm while the engine cranks. Ingersoll Rand's matching accessories include the SRV150 1-1/2 in. relay valve, ST900-267-24 strainer, solenoid valves and push-button valves.

Ingersoll Rand pneumatic air starters can replace any factory mounted starter engine and simultaneously offer a variety of helpful benefits. Compared to conventional electric starters, a pneumatic air starter occupies considerably less space as it is run by air. Pneumatic air starters are also considered safer in hazardous environments as they do not produce electrical sparks like electric starters sometimes do, thus eliminating the risk of igniting flammable materials that may be present.
Ingersoll Rand air starters have significantly more torque than electric starters of equivalent size, and that allows even a small air starter to start very large engines and turbines. In addition, electric starters as well as their wiring may become excessively hot in the event that it takes longer than expected to start the engine, while air-starters can be run for as long as their air supply lasts. Turbine starters provide even more torque and tend to be simpler, and therefore are a natural fit for turbine engines. Turbine air starters are utilized extensively on large turbofan engines commercial and military aircraft; as well as marine ships and vessels, trains, heavy construction equipment, and more.
