Description
The Ingersoll Rand ST750GBDI03R31 is a genuine IR ST700-series inertia-engagement turbine air starter, sealed for compressed air or natural gas. It delivers up to 55 hp (41 kW) and 250 ft-lb (339 N·m) of breakaway torque at 150 psi, and Ingersoll Rand rates it for diesel engines from 16 to 130 liters. It has a half-arc (50%) turbine, 2.18:1 "B" gearing and an SAE No. 3 flange, and it drives a right-hand 12-tooth, 6/8 pitch code 31 pinion. Its turbine motor needs no lubrication, and the planetary gears run sealed in oil.

Running on Natural Gas

The "G" in ST750GBDI03R31 means the starter is sealed for gas. On gas compression sites and pipeline stations, the ST750G can run on the same pipeline gas that fuels the engine. Ingersoll Rand's installation guidance for gas operation:
- Pipe the starter exhaust (and any relief-valve outlet) away to a safe location.
- Use gas-rated controls: the SRV150SS relay valve and the SMB-G618 push-button valve.
- Set the regulator so the pressure measured at the starter never exceeds the maximum on the nameplate.
How to Read the Model Number
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ST7 | ST700 series turbine starter |
| 50 | Percent arc: 50% (half) arc (99 = full arc, 30 to 90 psi) |
| G | Gas sealed |
| B | Gear ratio 2.18:1 (C = 2.53:1) |
| D | Type of gear case |
| I | Inertia engagement (P = pre-engaged) |
| 03 | SAE No. 3 mounting flange |
| R | Right-hand rotation |
| 31 | Pinion: 12 teeth, 6/8 pitch |
| -XX (optional suffix) | Orientation code for the inlet, exhaust and drive housing. For non-standard positions, order "-POS". |
ST750GBDI03R31 FAQ
Is the ST750GBDI03R31 still available, and what replaces it?
Ingersoll Rand's current turbine line for this engine range is the ST1000 series. The ST1000 equivalent of the ST750GBDI03R31 is the ST1060BI03R31. It is also inertia engaged, B ratio, SAE 3 flange and code 31 pinion, and it is sealed for gas and air. It delivers 70 hp at 150 psi. IR's supersession list moves the ST750GBDI03R31-2A configuration to the ST1060BI03R31S-2G. Call us and we will confirm current availability of the ST750GBDI03R31 and quote the ST1060 alternative side by side.
Can it crank for a long time?
Ingersoll Rand does not rate the ST750 for extended cranking (more than 10 seconds). If your engine needs long crank cycles, the ST1000 series is the better choice.
What air supply and accessories does it need?
Supply 90 to 150 psi through a 1-1/2 in. line, with enough receiver volume to deliver up to 1,300 scfm while the engine cranks. Ingersoll Rand's matching accessories are:
- SRV150 1-1/2 in. relay valve for air, or SRV150SS for gas
- ST900-267-24 1-1/2 in. strainer (300 mesh)
- 150BMP-1051B (12 V) or 150BMP-2451B (24 V) solenoid valve, or SMB-618 / SMB-G618 push-button valve
- 150BMP-1056 check valve, 150BMP-1067 drain valve and 150BMP-1064 pressure gauge
What engines does it fit?
Ingersoll Rand recommends the ST750 with B gearing for diesel engines from 16 to 130 L with SAE No. 3 starter pads and 12-tooth, 6/8-pitch, right-hand ring gear engagement. Look up your engine in our Air Starter Model Finder, or call us with the engine model and serial number and we will confirm fit.

Ingersoll Rand pneumatic air starters can replace any factory mounted starter engine and simultaneously offer a variety of helpful benefits. Compared to conventional electric starters, a pneumatic air starter occupies considerably less space as it is run by air. Pneumatic air starters are also considered safer in hazardous environments as they do not produce electrical sparks like electric starters sometimes do, thus eliminating the risk of igniting flammable materials that may be present.
Ingersoll Rand air starters have significantly more torque than electric starters of equivalent size, and that allows even a small air starter to start very large engines and turbines. In addition, electric starters as well as their wiring may become excessively hot in the event that it takes longer than expected to start the engine, while air-starters can be run for as long as their air supply lasts. Turbine starters provide even more torque and tend to be simpler, and therefore are a natural fit for turbine engines. Turbine air starters are utilized extensively on large turbofan engines commercial and military aircraft; as well as marine ships and vessels, trains, heavy construction equipment, and more.
