Engine builders change ring gears and starter pads between serial ranges, so confirm the ring gear and rotation before you order. Look up your engine in our Air Starter Model Finder, or call us with the engine model and serial number.
How to Read the Model Number
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| SS350 | SS350 series vane starter |
| G | Gas sealed |
| E | Gear ratio 3.46:1 (B = 2.18:1, E = 3.46:1) |
| 03 | SAE No. 3 mounting flange |
| R | right-hand rotation |
| 29 | Pinion: 12-tooth 8/10 pitch |
| -03I | Orientation code for the inlet, exhaust and drive housing |
Why Choose the SS350GE03R29?
- Compact and powerful. A 36 hp vane motor in a 33 lb package for 8 to 27 L engines.
- Pre-engaged drive. The pinion is fully in mesh before cranking begins, which reduces ring gear wear.
- Runs on air or natural gas. The SS350G is gas sealed.
- No sparks, no batteries. No electrical arcing and no dependence on battery condition.
- Two gearing choices. B gearing (2.18:1) favors speed; E gearing (3.46:1) gives more breakaway torque for harder-to-turn engines.
SS350GE03R29-03I FAQ
What is the opposite-rotation version of the SS350GE03R29-03I?
The SS350GE03L32-01C is the opposite-rotation counterpart. Power, flange and gearing are the same; only the rotation and the matching pinion code differ. Match the rotation printed on your existing starter's nameplate.
What is the difference between B and E gearing?
E gearing (3.46:1) delivers more breakaway torque at lower speed (160 ft-lb at 150 psi) than B gearing (2.18:1, 110 ft-lb). Both give 36 hp at 150 psi. Choose the ratio your engine was specified with.
Can it run on natural gas?
Yes. The "G" means the starter is gas sealed. Pipe the exhaust away to a safe location when running on gas.
Can it crank for a long time?
Ingersoll Rand does not rate this starter for extended cranking (more than 10 seconds). For hard-starting engines or long crank cycles, step up to an SS800 or a turbine starter.
What air supply and accessories does it need?
Provide a 90 to 150 psi supply through a 1-1/4 in. line, with enough receiver volume to deliver up to 900 scfm while the engine cranks. Ingersoll Rand's matching accessories include SRV100 or SRV125 relay valve, ST1000-267-24 strainer, 150BMP-1051B (12 V) or 150BMP-2451B (24 V) solenoid valve, SS350-A674 muffler.
Is there a lube-free alternative?
For smaller engines, Ingersoll Rand's lube-free SS100 covers engines up to 10 L. For turbine starters in this size, see the ST400 series.

Ingersoll Rand pneumatic air starters can replace any factory mounted starter engine and simultaneously offer a variety of helpful benefits. Compared to conventional electric starters, a pneumatic air starter occupies considerably less space as it is run by air. Pneumatic air starters are also considered safer in hazardous environments as they do not produce electrical sparks like electric starters sometimes do, thus eliminating the risk of igniting flammable materials that may be present.
Ingersoll Rand air starters have significantly more torque than electric starters of equivalent size, and that allows even a small air starter to start very large engines and turbines. In addition, electric starters as well as their wiring may become excessively hot in the event that it takes longer than expected to start the engine, while air-starters can be run for as long as their air supply lasts. Turbine starters provide even more torque and tend to be simpler, and therefore are a natural fit for turbine engines. Turbine air starters are utilized extensively on large turbofan engines commercial and military aircraft; as well as marine ships and vessels, trains, heavy construction equipment, and more.
