Sizing a Starter for a Detroit Diesel Engine

• Two-stroke engines. Detroit Diesel Series 53, 71, 92 and 149 engines are two-stroke diesels. Ingersoll Rand's ranges may be multiplied by 1.5 for 2-stroke diesels, so a starter rated for 40 L covers a 60 L two-stroke.
• Hard starts. For cold climates, heavy driven loads or other adverse conditions IR says to use the next more powerful starter.
• Mounting. Detroit Diesel uses different flywheel housings, ring gears and rotation across models and serial ranges. Each engine page lists the flange, pinion and rotation; confirm them against your current starter's nameplate.
