Description
The Ingersoll Rand ST499C03R31 is a genuine IR ST400-series turbine air starter built for low-pressure air supplies of 30 to 90 psi. It delivers up to 26 hp and 185 ft-lb of breakaway torque at 90 psi. It mounts on an SAE No. 3 flange, turns right-hand through a 12-tooth 6/8 pitch pinion, and takes air through an SAE split-flange inlet. Its turbine motor needs no lubrication. Ingersoll Rand's ST400 series covers diesel engines from 5 to 60 liters in power generation, marine, rail and transportation service.

ST499C03R31 FAQ
What is the opposite-rotation version of the ST499C03R31?
The ST499C03L32 is the opposite-rotation counterpart. Power, flange and gearing are the same; only the rotation and the matching pinion code differ. Match the rotation printed on your existing starter's nameplate.
Which ST400-series model do I need: ST400, ST455 or ST499?
They share the same housing and mounting. They differ in turbine arc, which sets the pressure they are built for: the ST400 (44% arc) for 90 to 150 psi, the ST455 (55% arc) up to 120 psi, and the ST499 (full arc) up to 90 psi. Never run a starter above the maximum pressure stamped on its nameplate.
Does the ST400 need lubrication?
No. The turbine motor needs no external lubrication, and the gears and bearings run in a sealed oil bath.
Can it crank for a long time?
Ingersoll Rand does not rate this starter for extended cranking (more than 10 seconds). For hard-starting engines or long crank cycles, choose a larger turbine such as the ST600.
What air supply and accessories does it need?
Provide a 30 to 90 psi supply, with enough receiver volume to deliver up to 765 scfm while the engine cranks. Ingersoll Rand's matching accessories include the ST900-267-24 1-1/2 in. strainer (300 mesh), SRV125 relay valve, 150BMP-1051B / 150BMP-2451B solenoid valves, SMB-618 push-button valve and the ST400-A339M manual control valve.

Ingersoll Rand pneumatic air starters can replace any factory mounted starter engine and simultaneously offer a variety of helpful benefits. Compared to conventional electric starters, a pneumatic air starter occupies considerably less space as it is run by air. Pneumatic air starters are also considered safer in hazardous environments as they do not produce electrical sparks like electric starters sometimes do, thus eliminating the risk of igniting flammable materials that may be present.
Ingersoll Rand air starters have significantly more torque than electric starters of equivalent size, and that allows even a small air starter to start very large engines and turbines. In addition, electric starters as well as their wiring may become excessively hot in the event that it takes longer than expected to start the engine, while air-starters can be run for as long as their air supply lasts. Turbine starters provide even more torque and tend to be simpler, and therefore are a natural fit for turbine engines. Turbine air starters are utilized extensively on large turbofan engines commercial and military aircraft; as well as marine ships and vessels, trains, heavy construction equipment, and more.
