Description
The Ingersoll Rand ST499C03L32 is a genuine IR ST400-series full-arc (99%) turbine air starter built for low-pressure air supplies of 30 to 90 psi. It delivers 185 ft-lb (251 N·m) of breakaway torque and 26 hp (19 kW) at just 90 psi, and still cranks with 50 ft-lb at 30 psi. It mounts on an SAE No. 3 flange, turns left hand through a 12-tooth, 6/8 pitch code 32 pinion, and takes air through an SAE split-flange inlet. Its turbine motor needs no lubrication. Ingersoll Rand's ST400 series covers diesel engines from 5 to 60 liters in power generation, marine, rail and transportation service.

Performance by Supply Pressure
A full-arc turbine is designed to make its torque at low pressure. Ingersoll Rand publishes these figures for the ST499:
| Supply pressure | Breakaway torque | Speed at max power | Max power | Flow at max power |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 psi (2.1 bar) | 50 ft-lb (68 N·m) | 1,550 rpm | 7 hp (5 kW) | 320 scfm (151 L/s) |
| 60 psi (4.1 bar) | 115 ft-lb (156 N·m) | 1,600 rpm | 14 hp (10 kW) | 550 scfm (260 L/s) |
| 90 psi (6.2 bar) | 185 ft-lb (251 N·m) | 1,650 rpm | 26 hp (19 kW) | 765 scfm (361 L/s) |
ST400, ST455 or ST499: Which Arc Do You Need?
The three ST400-series models share the same housing and mounting. They differ in the turbine arc, which sets the pressure they are built for:
| Model | Turbine arc | Maximum pressure | Breakaway torque at max pressure | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ST400 | 44% | 150 psi | 150 ft-lb at 150 psi | High-pressure air systems |
| ST455 | 55% | 120 psi | 185 ft-lb at 120 psi | Mid-pressure systems |
| ST499 | 99% | 90 psi | 185 ft-lb at 90 psi | Low-pressure plant air, 30 to 90 psi |
If your air supply is regulated at or below 90 psi, the ST499 gives you the most torque. If you have 120 to 150 psi available, the part-arc ST400C03L32 is the better match. Never run an ST499 above its 90 psi nameplate rating.
Typical ST400-Series Installation

Ingersoll Rand's recommended ST400 installation uses:
- ST900-267-24 1-1/2 in. strainer (300 mesh) to keep scale and debris out of the turbine
- SRV125 1-1/4 in. relay valve (SRV125T for transit vehicles), or the ST400-C339 relay valve with top-mounted solenoid
- 150BMP-1051B (12 V) or 150BMP-2451B (24 V) solenoid valve, or an SMB-618 push-button valve or ST400-A339M manual control valve
- ST400-16 SAE J518 split flange for the inlet connection
Set the regulator so the pressure measured at the starter never exceeds the maximum stamped on the nameplate (90 psi for the ST499).
How to Read the Model Number
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ST499 | ST400 series, 99% (full) arc turbine, 90 psi maximum |
| (no letter) | SAE split-flange inlet (I = 1 in. NPT inlet) |
| C | Gear ratio |
| 03 | SAE No. 3 mounting flange (01 = SAE No. 1) |
| L | Left-hand rotation (R = right hand) |
| 32 | Pinion: 12 teeth, 6/8 pitch, left hand |
ST499C03L32 FAQ
What is the difference between the ST499C03L32 and the ST499IC03L32?
Only the air inlet. The ST499C03L32 has an SAE J518 split-flange inlet. The ST499IC03L32 has a 1 in. NPT threaded inlet. Performance, mounting and pinion are identical, so choose the one that matches your existing air piping.
Why choose a turbine starter over a vane starter?
The ST400's turbine motor needs no lubrication, and its gears and bearings run in a sealed oil bath. There is no lubricator to fill and no oil mist in the exhaust. A full-arc turbine like the ST499 also keeps cranking at pressures as low as 30 psi, where it still delivers 50 ft-lb of breakaway torque.
How do I know if I need left-hand rotation?
Rotation must match your engine. The nameplate on your current starter shows it: an L in the model number means left hand and an R means right hand. The right-hand equivalent of this starter is the ST499C03R31.
What engines does it fit?
The ST400 series covers diesel engines from 5 to 60 L with SAE No. 3 starter pads and 12-tooth, 6/8-pitch ring gear engagement. Ingersoll Rand application data lists this model for the Daihatsu 5DC-17 marine diesel. Look up your engine in our Air Starter Model Finder, or call us with the engine model and serial number.

Ingersoll Rand pneumatic air starters can replace any factory mounted starter engine and simultaneously offer a variety of helpful benefits. Compared to conventional electric starters, a pneumatic air starter occupies considerably less space as it is run by air. Pneumatic air starters are also considered safer in hazardous environments as they do not produce electrical sparks like electric starters sometimes do, thus eliminating the risk of igniting flammable materials that may be present.
Ingersoll Rand air starters have significantly more torque than electric starters of equivalent size, and that allows even a small air starter to start very large engines and turbines. In addition, electric starters as well as their wiring may become excessively hot in the event that it takes longer than expected to start the engine, while air-starters can be run for as long as their air supply lasts. Turbine starters provide even more torque and tend to be simpler, and therefore are a natural fit for turbine engines. Turbine air starters are utilized extensively on large turbofan engines commercial and military aircraft; as well as marine ships and vessels, trains, heavy construction equipment, and more.
