Description
The Ingersoll Rand SS815GB03R31 is a genuine IR SS800-series pre-engaged vane air starter. It produces up to 75 hp (56 kW) and 250 ft-lb (339 N·m) of breakaway torque at 150 psi, and IR rates it for diesel engines from 16 to 130 liters. It bolts to an SAE No. 3 flange and drives the ring gear through a 12-tooth, 6/8 pitch, right-hand pinion with 2.18:1 "B" gearing. Because it is gas sealed, it runs on compressed air or natural gas. Common applications include Caterpillar 3500, Cummins K38/QSK, Detroit Diesel 149 and MTU 2000/4000 engines, as well as Waukesha gas compressor engines.

How to Read the Model Number
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| SS8 | SS800 series vane starter |
| 15 | Pre-engaged type (10 = inertia; 15, 25, 50 = pre-engaged) |
| G | Gas sealed, for air or natural gas |
| B | Gearing, 2.18:1 (C = 2.53:1, D = 3.44:1) |
| 03 | SAE No. 3 mounting flange |
| R | Right-hand rotation |
| 31 | Pinion: 12 teeth, 6/8 pitch, 20° pressure angle |
| -XXX (optional suffix) | Orientation code for the inlet, exhaust and drive housing, e.g. SS815GB03R31-22G. The suffix changes how the starter is clocked, not whether it fits the engine. |

Engine builders change ring gears and starter pads between serial ranges, so please confirm the ring gear tooth count, pitch and rotation before you order. You can look up your engine in our Air Starter Model Finder, or call us with the engine model and serial number.
Why Choose the SS815 Vane Starter?
- High torque at low speed. The vane motor delivers its best torque at lower rpm than a turbine. Lower speed is easier on bearings and needs less planetary gear reduction.
- Pre-engaged drive. The pinion is fully in mesh before cranking begins. This reduces milling of the ring gear and pinion, which matters on heavy, high-compression engines.
- No sparks, no batteries. A pneumatic starter has no electrical arcing, so it suits hazardous areas on offshore platforms, gas compression sites and refineries. It also does not lose cranking power to cold batteries.
- Runs on air or natural gas. The gas-sealed housing lets you use pipeline gas where compressed air isn't available.
- Easy to install and service. Thanks to the offset design and the clockable inlet, exhaust and drive housing, one starter fits many engine layouts. It can be serviced in the field with the SS800-TK2 kit.
Industries served: marine propulsion and auxiliary gensets, oil and gas drilling and well service, natural gas compression, mining and off-highway equipment, locomotives and rail, standby and prime power generation.
SS815GB03R31 FAQ
What is the difference between the SS815GB03R31 and the SS815GB03L32?
Only the rotation and pinion differ. The SS815GB03R31 has a right-hand rotation and the code 31 pinion. The SS815GB03L32 has a left-hand rotation and the code 32 pinion, which is the left-hand version of the same 12-tooth, 6/8-pitch pinion. Power, flange and gearing are the same.
What is the difference between the SS810, SS815, SS825 and SS850?
All four use the same 75 hp SS800 vane motor. The SS810 is an inertia-engagement starter. The SS815 (B ratio, 2.18:1) is pre-engaged and covers diesel engines from 16 to 130 L. The SS825 (C ratio, 2.53:1) is pre-engaged and covers 80 to 200 L. The SS850 (D ratio, 3.44:1) has an "09" flange and covers 160 to 320 L. Compare the full SS800 series.
Can the SS815GB03R31 run on natural gas?
Yes. The "G" in the model number means the starter is gas sealed, so it can run on compressed air or natural gas. When you run it on gas, pipe the exhaust away to a safe location as required by your site's codes.
Is the SS815 suitable for long cranking cycles?
IR does not rate the SS815 for extended starting capability (cranking longer than 10 seconds). For hard-starting engines, cold climates or applications that need long crank cycles, step up to the next larger starter. Another option is a turbine starter such as the ST2060B03R31, which uses the same SAE 3 flange and 31 pinion.
What air supply does the SS815GB03R31 need?
You need a 90 to 150 psi supply delivered through a line no smaller than the 1-1/2 in. inlet, with enough receiver volume to supply up to 1,700 scfm while the engine cranks. Keep the supply line short, add a lubricator and an inlet strainer, and use a properly sized relay valve. Higher pressure gives more torque and speed, as shown in the performance table above.
What replaces the ASC 1815 or other SS800 copies?
The ASC 1815 (1815FGB03R31) and other aftermarket SS815-pattern starters copy the Ingersoll Rand SS815 design. ASC publishes the SS815GB03R31 as the crossover for its right-hand 1815, so it is a direct path back to genuine Ingersoll Rand equipment.

Ingersoll Rand pneumatic air starters can replace any factory mounted starter engine and simultaneously offer a variety of helpful benefits. Compared to conventional electric starters, a pneumatic air starter occupies considerably less space as it is run by air. Pneumatic air starters are also considered safer in hazardous environments as they do not produce electrical sparks like electric starters sometimes do, thus eliminating the risk of igniting flammable materials that may be present.
Ingersoll Rand air starters have significantly more torque than electric starters of equivalent size, and that allows even a small air starter to start very large engines and turbines. In addition, electric starters as well as their wiring may become excessively hot in the event that it takes longer than expected to start the engine, while air-starters can be run for as long as their air supply lasts. Turbine starters provide even more torque and tend to be simpler, and therefore are a natural fit for turbine engines. Turbine air starters are utilized extensively on large turbofan engines commercial and military aircraft; as well as marine ships and vessels, trains, heavy construction equipment, and more.
