Description
The Ingersoll Rand 150BMGE21RH-6 is a genuine IR 150BM-series inertia-engagement vane air starter. It delivers up to 32 hp (24 kW) and 155 ft-lb (210 N·m) of breakaway torque at 150 psi. Ingersoll Rand recommends it for diesel engines from 8 to 27 liters. It has 3.46:1 "E" gearing, a right-hand 11-tooth 6/8 pitch inertia pinion, and a gas-sealed housing that runs on compressed air or natural gas. Applications include the Detroit Diesel 8V-71, 8V-92 and 12V-71 and the Cummins KTA14 and KTA19.

Ingersoll Rand application data and installed examples list the 150BMGE21RH-6 for:
- Detroit Diesel: 8V-71, 8V-92 and 12V-71
- Cummins: KTA14 and KTA19 marine and industrial engines
- Waukesha: H24 and WOK series engines
The starter must match your flywheel ring gear (11-tooth pinion, 6/8 pitch, right-hand rotation) and your engine's SAE No. 3 starter pad. Look up your engine in our Air Starter Model Finder, or call us with the engine model and serial number.
How to Read the Model Number
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 150 | Starter size (150 frame) |
| BMG | Vane motor, inertia engagement, gas sealed (BMP = pre-engaged) |
| E | Gearing, 3.46:1 (D = 3.94:1) |
| 21 | Inertia drive housing |
| RH | Right-hand rotation (LH = left hand) |
| 6 | Pinion: 11 teeth, 6/8 pitch |
| -XXX (optional suffix) | Orientation code for the inlet, exhaust and drive housing, e.g. 150BMGE21RH6-02O. The suffix changes how the starter is clocked, not whether it fits. |
Why Choose the 150BMGE21RH-6?
- Simple inertia drive. No separate engagement piston or shift mechanism, which keeps the starter compact and easy to service.
- High torque from a vane motor. The vane motor and 3.46:1 gearing give strong breakaway torque for mid-size diesels.
- Runs on air or natural gas. The gas-sealed 150BMG housing lets you use pipeline gas where compressed air isn't available.
- No sparks, no batteries. A pneumatic starter has no electrical arcing, so it suits engine rooms, offshore platforms and hazardous locations.
- Fits many installations. The inlet, exhaust and drive housing can be clocked into 288 combinations, and the starter is field serviceable with the 150BM-TK2 kit.
150BMGE21RH-6 FAQ
What is the difference between an inertia and a pre-engaged starter?
An inertia starter like the 150BMGE21RH-6 spins up and throws its pinion into the ring gear as it accelerates. A pre-engaged starter, such as the 150BMPE88R54-020, pushes the pinion fully into mesh before the motor starts to turn. Pre-engaged starters are gentler on ring gears, while inertia starters are simpler. Always replace a starter with the engagement type your engine was designed for.
What is the difference between the 150BMGE21RH-6 and the 150BMGE21RH6-02O?
They are the same starter. The -02O suffix specifies a particular inlet, exhaust and drive-housing orientation. If you are replacing an existing starter, match the full number on its nameplate, or tell us how your inlet and exhaust ports are positioned.
Is there a turbine alternative?
Yes. Ingersoll Rand supersedes current 150BM models with its 150TM "F" turbine starters by changing the B to a T and the E to an F. The 150BMGE21RH-6 crosses to the 150TMGF21RH6. It is also sealed for air or gas, uses the proven 150BM front end, keeps the same inlet and outlet locations for an easy change-out, and needs no external lubrication.
What air supply and accessories does it need?
Supply 90 to 150 psi through a 1-1/4 in. line, with enough receiver volume to deliver up to 680 scfm while the engine cranks. Ingersoll Rand's matching accessories are the SRV125 1-1/4 in. relay valve (SRV125T for vehicles), the NL-24-8 in-line lubricator, the 150BM-A674 muffler, and the 150BMP-1051B (12 V) or 150BMP-2451B (24 V) solenoid valve.
Can it crank for a long time?
Ingersoll Rand does not rate the 150BM for extended cranking (more than 10 seconds). For hard-starting engines or cold climates, choose a larger starter or a turbine model.

Ingersoll Rand pneumatic air starters can replace any factory mounted starter engine and simultaneously offer a variety of helpful benefits. Compared to conventional electric starters, a pneumatic air starter occupies considerably less space as it is run by air. Pneumatic air starters are also considered safer in hazardous environments as they do not produce electrical sparks like electric starters sometimes do, thus eliminating the risk of igniting flammable materials that may be present.
Ingersoll Rand air starters have significantly more torque than electric starters of equivalent size, and that allows even a small air starter to start very large engines and turbines. In addition, electric starters as well as their wiring may become excessively hot in the event that it takes longer than expected to start the engine, while air-starters can be run for as long as their air supply lasts. Turbine starters provide even more torque and tend to be simpler, and therefore are a natural fit for turbine engines. Turbine air starters are utilized extensively on large turbofan engines commercial and military aircraft; as well as marine ships and vessels, trains, heavy construction equipment, and more.
