Description
The Ingersoll Rand 150BMPE88R54-020 is a genuine IR 150BM-series pre-engaged vane air starter. It delivers up to 32 hp (24 kW) and 155 ft-lb (210 N·m) of breakaway torque at 150 psi. Ingersoll Rand recommends it for diesel engines from 8 to 27 liters. It bolts to an SAE No. 3 pad through the code 88 pre-engaged drive housing and drives an 11-tooth, 6/8 pitch right-hand pinion through 3.46:1 "E" gearing. Ingersoll Rand application data lists it for well over 100 engine models, including the Caterpillar 3406 and 3408, Cummins N14, K19 and QSK19, Detroit Diesel Series 60, 8V-92 and 12V-71, and Mack END673.

How to Read the Model Number
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 150 | Starter size (150 frame) |
| BMP | Vane motor, pre-engaged (BMG = inertia, gas sealed) |
| E | Gearing, 3.46:1 (D = 3.94:1) |
| 88 | Pre-engaged drive housing for an SAE No. 3 pad (81 is the alternate pre-engaged housing) |
| R | Right-hand rotation (L = left hand) |
| 54 | Pinion: 11 teeth, 6/8 pitch |
| -020 | Orientation code for the inlet, exhaust and drive housing. Other orientations, such as 150BMPE88R54-200, are the same starter clocked differently. |
Why Choose the 150BMPE88R54-020?
- Pre-engaged drive protects the ring gear. The pinion is fully in mesh before cranking begins, so it doesn't mill the ring gear the way a hard inertia engagement can.
- High torque at low speed. The vane motor and 3.46:1 gearing deliver 155 ft-lb at breakaway, enough for heavy, high-compression mid-size diesels.
- No sparks, no batteries. A pneumatic starter has no electrical arcing and does not lose cranking power to cold batteries, so it suits marine engine rooms, drilling rigs, mines and standby generators.
- Clocks to fit your engine. The inlet, exhaust and drive housing can be rotated (4 x 4 x 18 positions), and the starter is field serviceable with the 150BM-TK2 kit.
150BMPE88R54-020 FAQ
What replaces the 150BMPE88R54?
Ingersoll Rand supersedes current 150BM models with its 150TM "F" turbine starters by changing the B to a T and the E to an F, so the 150BMPE88R54 crosses to the 150TMPF88R54. The turbine uses the proven 150BM front end, keeps the same inlet and outlet locations for an easy change-out, and needs no external lubrication. IR later moved the 150TMPF to the ST150 series as the ST155FP88R54. We can quote the vane starter, the turbine crossover or both, so you can choose.
Can the 150BMPE88R54-020 run on natural gas?
No. The 150BMP is built for compressed air. For natural gas, Ingersoll Rand uses the gas-sealed 150BMG models, such as the 150BMGE21RH-6 (inertia engagement).
What does the -020 at the end mean?
It is the orientation code. It tells the factory which way to clock the inlet, the exhaust and the drive housing. All 150BMPE88R54 orientations have the same performance and fit; the suffix only affects where the ports point. If you are replacing an existing starter, match the full number on its nameplate.
What air supply and accessories does it need?
Supply 90 to 150 psi through a 1-1/4 in. line, with enough receiver volume to deliver up to 680 scfm while the engine cranks. Ingersoll Rand's matching accessories are the SRV125 1-1/4 in. relay valve (SRV125T for vehicles), the NL-24-8 in-line lubricator, the 150BM-A674 muffler, and the 150BMP-1051B (12 V) or 150BMP-2451B (24 V) solenoid valve.
Can it crank for a long time?
Ingersoll Rand does not rate the 150BM for extended cranking (more than 10 seconds). For hard-starting engines or cold climates, choose a larger starter.

Ingersoll Rand pneumatic air starters can replace any factory mounted starter engine and simultaneously offer a variety of helpful benefits. Compared to conventional electric starters, a pneumatic air starter occupies considerably less space as it is run by air. Pneumatic air starters are also considered safer in hazardous environments as they do not produce electrical sparks like electric starters sometimes do, thus eliminating the risk of igniting flammable materials that may be present.
Ingersoll Rand air starters have significantly more torque than electric starters of equivalent size, and that allows even a small air starter to start very large engines and turbines. In addition, electric starters as well as their wiring may become excessively hot in the event that it takes longer than expected to start the engine, while air-starters can be run for as long as their air supply lasts. Turbine starters provide even more torque and tend to be simpler, and therefore are a natural fit for turbine engines. Turbine air starters are utilized extensively on large turbofan engines commercial and military aircraft; as well as marine ships and vessels, trains, heavy construction equipment, and more.
