Barring over the starter to free a gummed rotor (Overview)

  1. Remove the 3/8 in pipe plug from the center of the motor housing cover.
  2. Insert a 3/8 in square drive wrench through the opening so it engages the square recess at the rear of the rotor.
  3. Turn the rotor by hand until it moves freely.

An outline only. Follow the full procedure, torque values and safety warnings in the document (from page 6).

Test and inspection after assembly (Overview)

  1. Turn the drive pinion in the starter drive by hand in the rotation direction; it should turn.
  2. Apply 90 psig to the motor inlet through a 3/8 in line; the starter should run smoothly.
  3. Plug the exhaust, apply 30 psig to the inlet and submerge the starter in non-flammable solvent for 30 seconds; no bubbles should appear.

An outline only. Follow the full procedure, torque values and safety warnings in the document (from page 11).

Frequently Asked Questions

Which lubricator does the SS810 starter need?

For cranking cycles under 10 seconds the manual recommends the HDL1 lubricator with diesel fuel or 10W non-detergent oil; for longer cycles it recommends the NL-24-8 in-line lubricator set to 1-3 drops per second.

What starter drive fits an SS810RB or SS810LB?

The parts list gives 20BM-299-1 for the SS810RB and 20BM-299-3 for the SS810LB.

How do I free a stuck rotor on an SS810 starter?

Remove the center 3/8 in pipe plug from the motor housing cover and turn the rotor by hand with a 3/8 in square drive until it is free.

What torque is used to mount an SS810 starter?

The mounting bolts to the flywheel bell housing are tightened to 100 ft-lb (136 N m).

What hose size should feed an SS810 starter?

Use 1-1/2 in hose or pipe for supply runs up to 15 ft and 2 in for longer runs.
