Reorienting the drive housing and air inlet (Overview)
- Use the dimension drawings to note the options: the drive housing has sixteen radial positions on the gear case and the inlet has four.
- Work out the orientation the engine mounting needs before touching the starter.
- To move the drive housing, take out its eight cap screws and turn it to the new position; it does not need to be separated from the gear case.
- Refit the drive housing cap screws and torque them to 28 ft-lb (38 Nm).
- If the inlet must move, remove the four motor housing cover cap screws with an 8 mm hex wrench and rotate the motor housing and/or cover; do not split the motor housing from the intermediate gear case, or gear oil is lost.
- Refit the cover cap screws and tighten them alternately to 60 ft-lb (81.4 Nm) in 20 ft-lb (27 Nm) steps.
An outline only. Follow the full procedure, torque values and safety warnings in the document (from page 2).
Barring over the engine (pre-engaged models) (Overview)
- Remove the splash deflector parts (or exhaust piping) and the 1/4 in pipe plug to reach the hole in the center of the housing exhaust cover.
- Disconnect the 1/4 in hose at the drive housing OUT port and plug that port.
- Apply at least 70 psig (4.8 bar) to the drive housing IN port to engage the pinion with the flywheel.
- Insert a 1/4 in hex wrench through the exhaust cover hole into the hex recess at the rear of the motor assembly.
- Turn the motor assembly by hand until the engine reaches the required position.
An outline only. Follow the full procedure, torque values and safety warnings in the document (from page 3).
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the ST750 and ST799 air starters?
In the model table the ST750 models are rated for a maximum supply pressure of 150 psig (1034 kPa), while the ST799 models are rated for 90 psig (621 kPa). Both use the same Series ST700 construction and model coding.
How much oil goes in an ST700 starter gear case and what type?
The manual calls for 175 ml (about 1/3 pint) of Dexron II automatic transmission fluid added through the side plug hole in the motor housing, with a caution not to overfill.
What torque is used on the ST700 starter mounting bolts?
The installation section says to tighten the mounting bolts to 100 ft-lb (136 Nm) when mounting the starter on the flywheel housing.
What size air supply line does an ST750 starter need?
Use 1-1/2 in hose or pipe for supply lines up to 15 ft long and 2 in hose or pipe for longer runs. A strainer is required in the inlet line of each starter.
What do the letters in an ST700 model number such as ST750GBDI03R31 mean?
The coding gives the starter size, percent arc, gas operation, gear ratio (B = 2.18:1, C = 2.53:1, D = 3.44:1), gear case type, drive type, drive housing and flange type, pinion, rotation and the drive housing and inlet orientation codes.
