Ingersoll Rand Series ST900 (ST950 / ST999) Turbine Air Starter Installation and Maintenance Manual (P7156)

This is the Ingersoll Rand installation and maintenance manual for the Series ST900 turbine-powered air starter, covering the ST950 and ST999 models with pre-engaged or inertia drives and B, C or D gear ratios. It is intended for installers and service technicians on off-highway, marine and stationary engines running on air or natural gas, and notes that the ST900 is built for long, heavy-duty cranking. It explains operating limits, installation and orientation, mounting dimensions, piping layouts and the model code, then provides illustrated parts lists with kits, a lube and torque drawing, overhaul steps, a turbine module change-out procedure, bench tests and troubleshooting.

Turbine module change-out (starters without directional housing exhaust) (Overview)

  1. Tag the starter control so the starter cannot be operated during the work.
  2. Take off the four cap screws holding the inlet flange to the motor housing and keep the O-ring from under the flange.
  3. Remove the four starter assembly cap screws at the rear of the starter.
  4. Lift the turbine module and housing exhaust cover assembly out of the gear case together.
  5. Fit the replacement module with its front cutout facing the large drive gear in the gear case.
  6. Refit the four starter assembly cap screws, torquing each to 45-50 ft-lb in 20 ft-lb steps.
  7. Grease the saved O-ring, refit the inlet flange, remove the tag and test the starter.

An outline only. Follow the full procedure, torque values and safety warnings in the document (from page 22).

Barring over the engine (pre-engaged models) (Overview)

  1. Disconnect the 1/4 in hose at the drive housing OUT port and plug that port with a 1/4 in pipe plug.
  2. Apply at least 70 psig (4.8 bar) to the drive housing IN port so the pinion engages the flywheel.
  3. Turn the motor assembly by hand with a 6 in long hex wrench until the engine reaches the required position.

An outline only. Follow the full procedure, torque values and safety warnings in the document (from page 3).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the ST950 and ST999 air starters?

In the ordering table the ST950 models have a maximum supply pressure of 150 psig (1034 kPa) and the ST999 models 90 psig (621 kPa). Both share the Series ST900 construction and model coding.

How long can an ST900 starter crank before it must rest?

The operating guidelines say that if the engine has not started after 30 seconds of cranking, stop and let the starter cool for 2-1/2 minutes before trying again. The ST900 is described as designed for long-crank, heavy-duty use.

What oil does the ST900 starter gearing use and how much?

Add 175 ml (about 1/3 pint) of Dexron II automatic transmission fluid through the side plug hole in the motor housing, plus 15 ml of Dexron II at the exhaust pipe plug hole.

What is the ST900 turbine module and can it be swapped as a unit?

The manual defines the turbine module as the motor rotor assembly, exhaust kit, motor housing and intermediate gear case, and gives a change-out procedure that removes and replaces it as one unit from the gear case.

Which inlet strainer does an ST900 starter need?

An ST900-267 strainer (or equivalent) is required on all starters in stationary applications. Sizes are ST900-267-24 for 1-1/2 in lines, ST900-267-32 for 2 in and ST900-267-64 for 4 in lines.
