Confirm part numbers against the serial and model plate of your starter. For any part not listed in our catalog, send us the number.
Testing the starter (Overview)
- Turn the drive pinion by hand in the starter's rotation; the clutch should ratchet smoothly with a light click.
- Turn it the opposite way; gearing and motor should spin freely.
- Apply 50 psig (3.4 bar) to the drive housing IN port; the pinion should move out and air should leave the OUT port.
- Plug OUT, apply 150 psig (10.3 bar) to IN, confirm no leakage and check pinion position and stroke against the stated dimensions.
- Run the motor on 90 psig (6.2 bar) through a 3/8 in hose; it should run smoothly.
- Plug the exhaust, apply 30 psig (2.1 bar) to the inlet and submerge for 30 seconds; no bubbles means it is sealed.
An outline only. Follow the full procedure, torque values and safety warnings in the document (from page 20).
Installing the HDL2 lubricator (Overview)
- To mount on the starter, replace one 3/8 in pipe plug in the motor housing cover with the HDL2; for remote mounting use the U-bolts and base clamp.
- For a remote unit, run 1/4 in hose from the lubricator to a 3/8 in tapped hole in the motor housing cover.
- Run a No. 6 hose from the lubricator oil inlet to the unpressurized fuel line, diesel tank or a separate reservoir, keeping the joint vacuum tight and free of sealant.
- Fill the oil supply line by hand before first use; a separate reservoir takes diesel fuel or SAE 10 / 10W non-detergent oil.
An outline only. Follow the full procedure, torque values and safety warnings in the document (from page 4).
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum air pressure for SS175 and SS350 starters?
The manual says not to run them below 70 psig (4.8 bar), and not above the pressure stamped on the nameplate.
What hose size do SS175 and SS350 starters need?
SS175: 1 in for lines up to 30 ft, 1-1/4 in beyond that. SS350: 1-1/4 in up to 30 ft and 1-1/2 in for longer runs.
How do I read an SS350 model number such as SS350GE03L32?
SS350 is the frame size, G means sealed for gas, E is the 3:1 gear ratio (B is 2:1), 03 is an SAE 3 flange, L is counterclockwise rotation and 32 is the pinion suffix; further characters give port orientation.
When should SS175 or SS350 vanes be replaced?
Replace the set if any vane is separated, cracked or spalled, or worn to 0.67 in (17 mm) or narrower at either end; the manual also recommends new vanes at every teardown.
What are the mounting bolt torques for SS175 and SS350 starters?
90 ft-lb (122 Nm) for 5/8 in bolts and 30 ft-lb (41 Nm) for 3/8 in bolts.
