Ingersoll Rand SS350 Starting System Installation and Maintenance Information (Form 10582498)

Ingersoll-Rand installation and maintenance information for the SS350 vane starter as a complete starting system for transport applications. Besides the starter itself (model code, pinion data, installation, parts list, overhaul and bench test), it covers the HDL2 and HDL3 lubricators and the SRV-series starter relay valve, and ends with an engine selection guide for Mercedes-Benz and Scania diesel engines. It is aimed at installers and service technicians.

Confirm part numbers against the serial and model plate of your starter. For any part not listed in our catalog, send us the number.

Testing the starter after assembly (Overview)

  1. Turn the drive pinion by hand in the rotation direction; the clutch should ratchet smoothly.
  2. Turn it the other way; gearing and motor should spin freely with no binding.
  3. Apply 50 psig to the IN port on the drive housing; the pinion should extend and air should exit the OUT port.
  4. Plug the OUT port, apply 150 psig to the IN port, confirm no leakage and measure the extended, stopped and retracted pinion positions.
  5. Feed 90 psig to the motor inlet through a 3/8 in hose; the motor should run smoothly.
  6. Plug the exhaust, apply 30 psig to the motor inlet and immerse the starter in non-flammable solvent for 30 seconds; no bubbles should appear.

An outline only. Follow the full procedure, torque values and safety warnings in the document (from page 14).

Lubricating the starter relay valve (Overview)

  1. Bleed off the air pressure.
  2. Disconnect the No. 4 control hose (or remove the plug) at the control air port near the bottom of the valve.
  3. Squirt about 1 oz (30 cc) of 10W oil into the valve through the opening.
  4. Reconnect the hose or reinstall the plug.

An outline only. Follow the full procedure, torque values and safety warnings in the document (from page 17).

Frequently Asked Questions

Which SS350 starter fits Mercedes-Benz OM442 and OM444 diesel engines?

The selection guide lists the SS350GE03R77 with an SAE03 flange for these engines.

What do the B and E letters mean in an SS350 model number?

They are the gear ratio code: B = 2.1 and E = 3.1. Each ratio uses its own rotor pinion and drive gear.

What inlet strainer does an SS350 starter need?

Each starter needs a strainer in its inlet line. The manual lists 300 mesh, 50 micron strainers ST900–267–24, ST900–267–32 and ST900–267–64 for 1-1/4, 2 and 4 in lines.

What is the mounting bolt torque for an SS350 starter?

Mounting bolts to the flywheel bell housing are tightened to 55-60 ft-lb (75-81 Nm).

Which lubricator should be used with the SS350?

For cranking cycles under 10 seconds the HDL2 is recommended; for longer cycles an NL–24–8 in-line lubricator set to 1-2 drops per second is recommended.
