Ingersoll Rand SS350GB20R83-32GF and SS350GE20R83-32GF Starter Testing and Parts Manual (P7121)

A short model-specific manual for two SS350 gas-capable vane starters, the B-ratio SS350GB20R83-32GF and the E-ratio SS350GE20R83-32GF. It opens with safety warnings and warning-label explanations, gives a six-step bench test for a rebuilt starter, and then provides a cross-section drawing, an exploded drawing and the complete numbered parts list including the SS350-TK2 tune-up kit. Full installation and maintenance instructions are in a separate form, P6633.

Bench testing a rebuilt starter (Overview)

  1. Turn the drive pinion by hand in the rotation direction; the clutch should ratchet smoothly with a light clicking.
  2. Turn the pinion the opposite way; gearing and motor should spin freely without binding.
  3. Apply 50 psig to the IN port on the drive housing; the pinion should extend and air should exit the OUT port.
  4. Plug the OUT port, apply 150 psig to the IN port, confirm no leakage, and measure pinion position extended, at the solid stop and retracted against the listed dimensions.
  5. Feed 90 psig to the motor inlet through a 3/8 in hose; the motor should run smoothly.
  6. Plug the exhaust, apply 30 psig to the motor inlet and submerge the starter in non-flammable solvent for 30 seconds; no bubbles should appear.

An outline only. Follow the full procedure, torque values and safety warnings in the document (from page 3).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the SS350GB20R83-32GF and SS350GE20R83-32GF?

They differ in gear ratio: the GB model uses the B-ratio rotor pinion, rotor pinion screw and drive gear, while the GE model uses the E-ratio versions. The rest of the parts list is shared.

What tune-up kit fits the SS350GB20R83-32GF and SS350GE20R83-32GF starters?

The parts list gives SS350-TK2, which covers the O-rings, front rotor bearing, vane packet, gear case O-ring, bearing retaining ring, gear case seal, piston O-ring, clutch jaw retaining ring and the drive housing seal, O-ring and gasket.

What pressures are used to test a rebuilt SS350 starter?

The test uses 50 psig and 150 psig on the engagement IN port, 90 psig at the motor inlet for a run check, and 30 psig with the exhaust plugged for a solvent-immersion seal check.

What does the R in SS350GB20R83 mean?

An R in the model number designates right-hand rotation, meaning the drive pinion turns clockwise when you face it.

Where are the full installation instructions for these models?

The manual refers to Form P6633 for detailed installation and maintenance information.
