Barring over the engine with the starter (Overview)
- Disconnect the 1/4 in. hose at the drive housing OUT port and plug that port with a 1/4 in. pipe plug.
- Take out the 3/8 in. pipe plug in the center of the motor housing cover.
- Engage the pinion with the flywheel by applying at least 70 psig (4.8 bar) to the drive housing IN port.
- Put a 5/16 in. hex wrench through the cover hole into the hex recess at the back of the rotor.
- Turn the rotor by hand until the engine reaches the required position.
An outline only. Follow the full procedure, torque values and safety warnings in the document (from page 4).
Leak test for gas operation (Overview)
- Assemble using the MBA31 plastic gasket and a thin film of sealant on the housing cover end plug and lubricator port plug.
- Plug the exhaust and regulate 40 psig (2.8 bar) into the inlet.
- Immerse the unit for 30 seconds in light oil or nonflammable solvent; any bubbles mean it is not fit for gas operation.
- Tighten or seal any leaking area and repeat the test.
An outline only. Follow the full procedure, torque values and safety warnings in the document (from page 4).
Frequently Asked Questions
How much torque and power does the Ingersoll Rand 150BMG starter produce?
The performance data at 120 psi for the E ratio gives a maximum torque of 108 ft-lb (146 Nm) and a maximum of 21.3 HP at 1740 RPM.
Which lubricator should be used with a 150BMG starter?
For cranking cycles under 10 seconds the manual recommends the HDL3 lubricator with diesel fuel or 10W nondetergent oil; for longer cycles it recommends an NL-24-8 line lubricator set to 1 to 3 drops per second.
What does the G in 150BMG mean?
G marks the gas sealed version. Models footnoted as offered gas sealed carry a G in the model number, for example 150BMGE21RH-6.
What replaced the 150BMC21RH-39 starter?
The model table lists 150BME21RH-6 as the replacement for 150BMC21RH-39, 150BME22RH-5 for 150BMC22RH-38 and 150BME21LH-11 for 150BME21LH-37.
What hose size does a 150BM starter need?
For a typical single-starter installation the table gives #16 (1 in.) hose up to 10 ft with an SRV 100 relay valve, and #20 (1-1/4 in.) hose from 10 to 30 ft with an SRV 125.
