Installing the HDL3 lubricator (Overview)
- Mount it on the starter in place of one of the 3/8 in. inlet boss pipe plugs, or remotely with the U-bolt and base clamp kit.
- For a remote mount, run a 1/4 in. hose from the lubricator outlet end to a 3/8 in. tapped hole on the starter inlet boss.
- Run a 1/4 in. hose from the 1/8 in. NPT oil inlet to the unpressurized fuel return line, the fuel tank or a separate reservoir; with the fuel tank, fit a 10 to 50 micron fuel filter.
- Torque the oil inlet fitting to 15-36 ft-lb (20.3-40.8 N m) on clean threads, with no sealant or tape.
- Fill the oil supply line by hand before first operation, and fill any separate reservoir with diesel fuel or SAE 10 or 10W oil.
An outline only. Follow the full procedure, torque values and safety warnings in the document (from page 8).
Testing the reassembled starter (Overview)
- Turn the pinion by hand in the rotation direction; the clutch should ratchet smoothly with a light click.
- Turn it the other way; gearing and motor should turn freely without binding.
- Run the motor slowly on an air hose and check rotation; wrong rotation means the motor was assembled incorrectly.
- Apply a little air to the control port nearest the gear case; the pinion should move to the engaged position and air should vent from the port nearest the mounting flange.
An outline only. Follow the full procedure, torque values and safety warnings in the document (from page 12).
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the 150BMPC and 150BMPE starters?
The parts list shows different gearing: C models use a 16-tooth rotor pinion and 43-tooth drive gear, while E models use a 13-tooth rotor pinion and 45-tooth drive gear.
What air pressure should a 150BMP starter run on?
The manual says not to exceed the pressure rating stamped on the nameplate and not to run below 70 psig (4.8 bar).
What oil should be used in the 150BMP starter lubricator in cold weather?
Below 32 °F (0 °C) the manual recommends diesel fuel; above that, a good SAE 10 nondetergent motor oil.
What is in the 150BM-TK2 tune-up kit?
According to the parts list it groups fifteen illustrated wear items, including the vanes, rotor and drive shaft bearings, gaskets, seals and the piston ring.
Can the 150BMP starter be used to bar over the engine?
Yes. With the OUT port plugged and at least 70 psig on the IN port to hold the pinion engaged, the rotor is turned by hand with a 5/16 in. hex wrench through the motor housing cover.
