Mounting a pre-engaged starter (Overview)
- Use a receiver tank rated at least to the starter's operating pressure; bleed and drain an in-service tank first.
- Fit the SRV125 relay valve to the tank with a 1-1/4 in short nipple, using the inlet marked IN.
- Mount the SMB-618 control valve or 12 V solenoid valve, the TA-STR-100 label and the gauge, connecting the control valve SUP side to the relay valve.
- Grease the ring gear teeth if possible and mount the starter on the flywheel housing at 100 ft-lb (136 Nm).
- Connect the DEL side of the control or solenoid valve to the drive housing IN port, and the drive housing OUT port to the top of the relay valve.
- Pipe the exhaust away if required, pressurize and soap-test every connection.
An outline only. Follow the full procedure, torque values and safety warnings in the document (from page 4).
Bench test after overhaul (Overview)
- Turn the drive pinion by hand in the starter direction; the clutch should ratchet with a light click.
- Turn it the opposite way; it should turn by hand.
- Apply 50 psig to the IN port and confirm the pinion moves out and air leaves the OUT port; then plug OUT and hold 150 psig with no leakage.
- Run the motor in a vise on 90 psig through a 3/8 in line and confirm direction and pinion chamfer position.
- Plug the exhaust, apply 20 psig and immerse for 30 seconds; no bubbles should appear.
An outline only. Follow the full procedure, torque values and safety warnings in the document (from page 13).
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the P mean in a 150T P air starter?
In the 150T ordering code the P position stands for a pre-engaged drive.
What pinions are available for the 150T( )P starter?
The pinion table lists codes 51 (13 teeth), 53 (12 teeth) and 54 (11 teeth), each in right or left rotation.
What happens if air is applied to the OUT port on a pre-engaged 150T?
The drive will malfunction and the pinion will not retract. The manual says to loosen the drive housing cap screws and housing plugs to vent the gear case and motor.
How much oil goes in a 150T( )P starter?
55 ml (1.9 fl oz) of 80W90 gear oil in the intermediate gear case and 7 ml (0.24 fl oz) of 80W90 hypoid gear oil in the rear motor bearing reservoir.
Which motor assembly fits a 150TMP starter?
The parts list gives 150TMFR-A53 for right-hand and 150TMFL-A53 for left-hand 150TMP starters; 150TLP starters use 150TLFR-A53 or 150TLFL-A53.
