Reorienting the starter housings (Overview)

  1. Decide from the engine mounting where the drive housing must sit relative to the gear case.
  2. Remove the nine drive housing cap screws, turn the drive housing to the new position without separating it, and refit the screws to 100 in-lb (11 Nm).
  3. Check whether the inlet port suits the hose routing.
  4. If needed, remove the four motor housing cover cap screws with a 9/16 in. wrench and turn the motor housing and/or inlet cover.
  5. Keep the motor housing joined to the intermediate gear case so the gear oil is not lost.
  6. Retighten the cover cap screws alternately to 25 ft-lb (34 Nm) in 10 ft-lb (14 Nm) steps.

An outline only. Follow the full procedure, torque values and safety warnings in the document (from page 4).

Bench test after reassembly (Overview)

  1. Turn the drive pinion by hand in the rotation direction; the clutch should ratchet smoothly with light clicking.
  2. Turn the pinion the opposite way; motor and gearing should turn freely by hand.
  3. Apply 50 psig (3.4 bar) to the IN port; the pinion should move out and air should exit the OUT port. Then plug OUT, apply 150 psig (10.3 bar) to IN and confirm nothing escapes.
  4. With the starter in a vise, run it on 90 psig (6.2 bar) through a 3/8 in. line and confirm smooth running in the nameplate direction.
  5. Plug the exhaust, apply 20 psig (1.4 bar) to the inlet and submerge the starter for 30 seconds in a nonflammable bubble liquid; no bubbles should appear.

An outline only. Follow the full procedure, torque values and safety warnings in the document (from page 15).

Frequently Asked Questions

What engines is the Ingersoll Rand 150T PF turbine starter designed for?

The manual states that the 150TMP turbine powered starters are intended for cranking diesel and natural gas fueled internal combustion engines.

What lubricants and quantities does the 150T starter need?

The intermediate gear case takes 55 ml (1.9 fl.oz.) of 80W90 gear oil and the rear motor bearing reservoir 7 ml (0.24 fl.oz.) of 80W90 hypoid oil. The offset gear case uses about 0.24 kg of Ingersoll Rand No. 130 grease.

What torque do the 150T starter mounting bolts take?

The manual gives 100 ft-lb (136 Nm) for the bolts that hold the starter to the flywheel housing.

What size air supply hose should be used?

Use 1-1/4 in. hose or pipe for supply lines up to 15 ft (4.6 m) and 1-1/2 in. for longer runs.

Can the inlet, exhaust and drive housing be repositioned?

Yes. The drive housing can be set in any of eighteen positions relative to the gear case, and the exhaust port and air inlet each have four positions.
