Mounting the starter and control circuit (Overview)

  1. Confirm the receiver tank's working pressure rating is at least the starter's maximum operating pressure, and bleed an in-service tank before connecting.
  2. Fit the SRV125 relay valve to the receiver on a 1-1/4 in. short nipple, using the port marked IN.
  3. Mount the SMB-618 control valve (or the optional 12 V solenoid valve 150BMP-1051B) on the panel, with the instruction label and pressure gauge nearby.
  4. Run 1/4 in. hose from the control valve supply side to the relay valve, teeing off to the gauge.
  5. Grease the ring gear teeth if possible, then bolt the starter to the flywheel housing at 100 ft-lb (136 Nm).
  6. On pre-engaged models connect DEL on the control valve to the drive housing IN port, and the drive housing OUT port to the relay or solenoid valve.
  7. Pressurize the system and soap-test every joint for leaks.

An outline only. Follow the full procedure, torque values and safety warnings in the document (from page 13).

Bench test after reassembly (Overview)

  1. Turn the pinion by hand in the rotation direction and check for smooth clutch ratcheting.
  2. Turn it the opposite way to confirm motor and gearing are free.
  3. Apply 50 psig (3.4 bar) to the IN port to check pinion travel, then plug OUT and apply 150 psig (10.3 bar) to confirm no leakage.
  4. Run the motor on 90 psig (6.2 bar) through a 3/8 in. line and check direction against the nameplate.
  5. Plug the exhaust, apply 20 psig (1.4 bar) and submerge for 30 seconds in nonflammable bubble liquid to check the seals.

An outline only. Follow the full procedure, torque values and safety warnings in the document (from page 19).

Frequently Asked Questions

Which grease does the 2004 edition of the 150T PF manual specify?

Edition 1 calls for Ingersoll-Rand No. 11 grease, about 0.24 kg of it in the offset gear case, together with 80W90 hypoid gear oil for the intermediate gear case and rear motor bearing.

Is there a seal kit for the 150T PF turbine starter?

Yes. The optional equipment list gives seal kit 150TMP-SK1 and tune-up kit 150TMP-TK1, covering the parts marked with one and two asterisks in the parts list.

Can the 150T starter run on natural gas?

The manual says Series 150T starters are designed for gas operation, but they are not fully sealed while running, so the exhaust must be vented or piped away.

What inlet strainer is recommended for a 150T starter?

Ingersoll-Rand lists five 300 mesh, 50-micron strainers from ST900-267-24 for 1-1/2 in. lines up to ST900-267-64 for 4 in. lines, to protect the turbine components.
