Installing and mounting the starter (Overview)

  1. Make all piping leak-proof, clean and free of stress from vibration, heat or unsupported weight.
  2. Fit a strainer in each starter inlet line and seal threads with SMB-441 sealant.
  3. In gas installations, pipe the starter, relief valve and control valve exhausts to a safe location.
  4. If supply pressure exceeds the nameplate rating, add a regulator ahead of the relay valve, with a relief valve set 15 psi above it if the regulator is not relieving.
  5. Coat the driving spline with automatic transmission fluid and mount the starter, torquing the mounting cap screws to 40-45 ft-lb (54-61 Nm).

An outline only. Follow the full procedure, torque values and safety warnings in the document (from page 4).

Test and inspection after assembly (Overview)

  1. Turn the splined shaft by hand in the rotation direction; it should turn freely.
  2. Turn it the other way through 12 to 15 turns; it is stiffer but must not bind.
  3. Confirm the orientation against the marks or installation drawing.
  4. Run the starter in a vise on 90 psi (6.2 bar) through a 3/8 in line and check direction of rotation.
  5. Submerge the starter in a non-flammable bubble liquid and apply 20 psi (1.38 bar) for 30 seconds; no bubbles should appear.

An outline only. Follow the full procedure, torque values and safety warnings in the document (from page 19).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a TS700 turbine starter run on natural gas?

Yes. The manual describes the TS700 as designed for air or gas operation, and requires that all exhausts be piped to a safe location in gas installations.

How much oil does a TS700 starter take?

About 300 ml (roughly 1 pint) of C32 grade turbine oil goes in through the motor housing side plug, plus 15 ml at the exhaust cover plug.

How often should TS700 oil and clutch be serviced?

Change the oil annually or every 500 starts; the clutch (TS700-359) is replaced after 1500 starts along with the bearings, seal and O-rings listed in the schedule.

How do I bar over the engine with a TS700 starter?

Remove the 1/4 in NPT plug from the directional exhaust housing to reach a 1/4 in hex socket in the rotor shaft, which can be used to turn the engine.

What is the maximum supply pressure for TS700 models?

It depends on the model: the ordering table lists 225 psi for most TS725 models, 175 psi for one TS725GZAA-RE entry, 150 psi for TS760GCAE-L and 90 psi for the TS799 models.
