Installing and mounting the starter (Overview)

  1. Make all pipe joints leak-proof and keep piping clean and free of scale, weld slag and stress on the starter.
  2. Fit a strainer in each inlet line and seal threads with SMB–441 sealant.
  3. For gas service, pipe the main exhaust, relief valve, control valve and drive housing vent to a safe location.
  4. Add a regulator ahead of the relay valve if supply pressure exceeds the nameplate, with a relief valve 15 psi above it when needed.
  5. Coat the driving spline with automatic transmission fluid and torque the mounting cap screws to 40-45 ft-lb (54-61 Nm).

An outline only. Follow the full procedure, torque values and safety warnings in the document (from page 6).

Final oil fill and test (Overview)

  1. With the exhaust elbow plug (28B) up, add 15 ml of jet turbine oil and refit the plug at 15 ft-lb (20 Nm).
  2. Install the bottom housing plug and inlet boss plug at 15 ft-lb (20 Nm).
  3. Lay the starter side plug up, add 350 ml of jet turbine oil and fit the side plug at 15 ft-lb (20 Nm).
  4. Hand-turn the splined shaft both ways and confirm orientation marks.
  5. Run the starter on 90 psi through a 3/8 in line, then leak-test submerged at 20 psi for 30 seconds.

An outline only. Follow the full procedure, torque values and safety warnings in the document (from page 15).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the TS799BBEF-LE and TS799BBEF-LM?

The last letter is the exhaust type: E is an elbow (90 degree exhaust cover ST700–350) and M is a V clamp straight exhaust cover (TS799–350). Each also has its own inlet flange kit.

How long can a TS799BBEF starter crank?

If the engine has not started in 60 seconds, stop and let the starter cool for 2 1/2 minutes before trying again.

How much oil does the TS799BBEF take?

350 ml of jet turbine oil goes in through the motor housing side plug, plus 15 ml at the exhaust elbow plug.

What is the maximum air pressure for the TS799BBEF?

Both the LE and LM models are rated for a maximum supply pressure of 150 psi (1035 kPa); never exceed the nameplate rating.

When should the TS799BBEF clutch be replaced?

The manual says to replace the clutch (TS799–359) after 1500 starts, together with the bearings, seal and O-rings in the schedule.
